What is the IntraLase Laser?
IntraLase™ has revolutionized laser eye surgery by replacing the microkeratome blade with a computer-guided laser, and is completely blade-free. The results are 100 times more accurate than traditional LASIK performed with a blade. This technology allows us to create a completely customized LASIK experience for patients, provides greater assurance that the first step of the LASIK surgery will be accurate and safe, and helps ensure the best possible LASIK results. And because corneal flaps created with the IntraLase™ procedure are thinner and more accurate than microkeratome-made flaps, people with thinner corneas (who may have previously been turned down for LASIK) may now be eligible candidates.
iFS™ Advanced Femtosecond Laser
The Atlanta Vision Clinic LASIK surgery center in Dubai is one of the first practices in the country to offer the iFS™ Advanced Femtosecond Laser. This fifth-generation iFS™ Femtosecond Laser provides the same level of safety, precision and high-quality results as the fourth-generation laser, but performs the procedure at faster speeds, creating a corneal flap in less than 10 seconds.
Additionally, the new iFS™ Laser includes a high-resolution digital video microscope, a touch screen and an ergonomic design, all of which help provide patients with a more comfortable LASIK experience. How does the IntraLase laser work?
Instead of making a cut in the outer layer of the cornea, the iFS femtosecond laser emits tiny pulses of laser light to create a uniform layer of microscopic bubbles beneath the surface of the eye. These bubbles indirectly separate the tissue so the surgeon can gently lift back the flap in preparation for the excimer laser correction. After the excimer laser correction, the flap is restored to its original position and “locks” back into place.
Are the outcomes of IntraLase and traditional LASIK different?
IntraLase improves upon the outcomes of traditional LASIK. Though traditional LASIK is widely used, one of its limitations is that it is not customizable. The lack of customization is important because everyone’s eyes and visual systems are unique. Your IntraLase treatment will be thoroughly customized to your unique eye so you can obtain your best vision.
IntraLase also creates thinner, more uniform flaps because it is controlled by a computer instead of using handheld instruments. Thin flaps reduce the risk of complications that can temporarily or permanently interfere with quality of vision after surgery.
Is IntraLase painful?
No, IntraLase is not painful. Your eyes will be completely numbed prior to the beginning of treatment to prevent discomfort. Patients usually feel nothing other than a few moments of slight pressure.
How does IntraLase allow very nearsighted people to have LASIK?
Someone who is nearsighted has a steep cornea, and it is essential to create a uniform flap of the right thickness. This is easier to accomplish with a computer-controlled iFS laser rather than a handheld surgical instrument.
I was told I wasn’t a good candidate for LASIK because I have thin corneas. Can I have IntraLase?
For someone with thin corneas, creating ultra-thin, ultra-precise flaps is paramount to preserving the integrity of the corneas. The computer-controlled iFS laser can create precise, uniform flaps at a pre-determined depth more easily than a handheld blade can.
What is the difference between IntraLase and PRK?
Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is the predecessor to LASIK, and it is still used in some cases today. PRK removes the outermost layer of corneal tissue entirely prior to the laser treatment. In the days following surgery, that layer of corneal cells must regenerate on its own. This can make for a slightly longer and less comfortable recovery.
Instead of removing the outermost layer of corneal cells, IntraLase creates a very thin, precise hinged flap, which is folded back before the laser treatment is applied. The flap is created in such a way that it locks back into place after treatment and heals on its own after surgery with minimal (if any) discomfort.
Are there any downsides to IntraLase?
One of the only downsides is that fewer surgeons are trained and qualified to use the IntraLase technology.
